I wanted to let all of you know that students in grades 3 – 6 are registered users of an online keyboarding program called Typing.com – https://www.typing.com/student/login. There is a link for it on the ‘Student’ page of the Foothill website. The program is free so don’t be surprised to see advertisements.
Please be sure that your student logs in so that the program can keep track of their progress. Most students know their login but they can always ask me or email me (there is a link on the contact page).
Research shows that students can greatly increase their skills by practicing 10-15 minutes, 3-5 times a week. Frequent practice is the best way to improve and that needs to be accomplished at home. Please emphasize correct fingering and good posture. Keyboarding skills are more important than ever because of the new SmarterBalanced testing. Students are expected to type several essays for the Language Arts portion. Please help them out by encouraging keyboarding practice at home.
Grades K-2 can also practice recognizing where letters are on the keyboard. They have several programs available to them through their grade level pages. Kindergarten students will also find links to practice mouse skills on their grade level page.
The main ‘Student’ page has numerous links for all grade levels. Be sure to bookmark the Foothill website for your students and find resources to practice math, reading, keyboarding, social studies, science, etc…
